Men's Bowling Wins at Western Shootout, Women Place Seventh
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- The Calumet College of St. Joseph men's bowling team won its second straight tournament this past weekend at the Western Shootout, making a dramatic comeback late to do so. The women's team also returned to action at the Western after two weeks off, placing seventh, their best finish of the season.
Things looked to be smooth sailing for the men's varsity team, as they wrapped up day one of bowling in first place. The team struggled early on in the baker round however, dropping to third with only ten baker games left. A 78 pin deficit was no problem for the Wave however, as the team showed their resilience, storming all the way back to win by 41 pins over second place McKendree University. Jeffrey Holden (JR/Salem, Ore.) finished first in the individual standings with a six game average of 229. Tyler James (JR/Deltona, Fla.) also placed high, coming in 16th with a 206.5 average. Michael Davidson finished just outside the top 100, with a 200.4 average over five games.
On the women's side of the lanes, the team made improvements after coming in 8th after the first day of action, to finish the Western in 7th place out of 26 teams, giving them their highest placing of the young season. Both Candice Tovo (SR/Valparaiso, Ind.) and Paige Chapman (SO/Portage, Ind.) finished in the top 100, with Tovo throwing an average of 179.7 over six games, while Chapman turned in an average of 197.4 after totaling the five games that she participated in.
Each team will now have a couple of weeks off before continuing their slate of action. The men will be back on the lanes Nov. 11-12 for the Leatherneck Classic in Moline, Ill. The women will wait one week longer, setting their sights on Jeffersontown, Ky. and the Striking Knights Classic on Nov.18-19.
