Crimson Wave Baseball splits on Day 1 of Warner Invite with close games against #8 St. Thomas and Siena Heights
Lake Wales, FL - The Calumet College Baseball team started their first day at the Warner Invite where they'll play 4 games and one bracket game. On day one, the Crimson Wave faced #13 St. Thomas and Siena Heights. CCSJ played two close games losing 6-5 against St. Thomas and winning 9-7 against Siena Heights.
Game One: STU 6, CCSJ 5
The Crimson Wave were the first to score against the #8 Bobcats as Blaze Cano hit a single down the left field line to score Nicholas Anderson and Michael Machnic in the top of the 1st inning.
Andrew Davenport started on the mound for the Wave and went 4.2 innings with 2 strikeouts and only allowed 4 hits, 2 home runs, and 6 earned runs.
In the top of the 2nd inning, CCSJ scored again off an RBI single to left field from Darrius Little and scored Jacob St. Marie. With bases loaded, Mechanic walked, scoring Sean Moore from 3rd.
The Wave's final run of the game was scored off another RBI single to left field from Cano, scoring Little and giving CCSJ a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the 2nd inning.
St. Thomas scored their first run in the bottom of the 2nd inning and continued to sneak up on CCSJ in the bottom of the 3rd inning after a 2-run homerun and fielders choice RBI to cut the Wave's lead to 5-4.
In the bottom of the 5th inning, St, Thomas hit another 2-run homerun to take the 6-5 lead over CCSJ. Gerardo Hernandez went to the mound for the Wave and shut down the Bobcats for the remaining 1.1 innings, giving up just 1 hit.
The Crimson Wave played a good defensive game against St. Thomas, recording no fielding errors, and were able to score 5 runs off 5 hits.
Little and Cano both went 2-for-4, Little with 1 RBI and run scored, and Cano with 3 RBIs.
Game Two: CCSJ 9, Siena Heights 7
In game two of the day, the Crimson Wave took on Siena Heights for the third time while in Florida. Maxwell Everaert got the start for CCSJ, going nearly a complete game, giving up 1 home run, 7 hits, and 1 earned run with 2 strikeouts in 6 innings of work.
The Saints started off the top of the 1st inning with a leadoff batter home run to take the lead.
In the bottom of the 1st inning, the Crimson Wave countered scoring 2 runs off a bases-loaded fielders choice RBI from Machnic and a wild pitch that scored Little.
In the top of the 3rd inning, Siena Heights scored on a bases-loaded fielder's choice to tie the game at 2-2.
CCSJ broke the game open in the bottom of the 3rd inning, scoring 5 runs. Little, Anderson, Gabriel Quinones, and Cano all hit an RBI double to give the Wave a 6-2 lead. Davenport hit an RBI single to right field to finish the inning with a 7-2 lead.
In the 5th inning, the Crimson Wave scored again off a bases-loaded walk RBI to Anderson and in the 6th inning off an error by the pitcher to bring CCSJ's lead to 9-2.
Jacob Pevion went to the mound in relief of Everaert in the top of the 7th inning, but after 2 walks, a wild pitch, and an error by the 1st baseman that allowed a run to score Jorge Santos went to pitch.
The Saints scored 3 runs off two hits, a walk, and a fielder's choice to bring CCSJ's lead down to 9-6. Anthony Rivera was the final pitcher to go to the mound in the 7th inning, hitting a batter to walk in Siena Height's 5th run of the inning but then following up with a strikeout for the 3rd out to secure ther Wave's 9-7 win.
At the plate, Anderson was 2-for-2 with 1 walk, 2 RBIs, and a run scored. Cano and Davenport were both 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and run scored.
