Davenport, FL – The Calumet College of St. Joseph baseball team bounced back from a tough loss with an impressive day, sweeping Cornerstone on Tuesday evening at Northeast Regional Park.
The sweep, a 4-3 win in game one followed by a 13-2 win in game two, gave the Crimson Wave their first two wins of the season.
Game 1: CCSJ 4, Cornerstone 3 – 11 innings
In Game 1, CCSJ tied the game in the third inning with a Michael Perry double that brought Tyler Brody home. The following inning in the top of the fourth, the Wave scored two more runs with hits from Perry and Blaze Cano.
The Crimson Wave gave up two runs in the fifth and were tied for the next five innings of play. In the top of the 11th inning with two runners out, Graham Gonzalez hit a solo home run to left field to give CCSJ the lead. A quick three and out in the bottom of the 11th and the Wave had their first win of the year.
Gonzalez went 3-for-6 with a home run, two RBIs and one run scored. Perry added one hit and one RBI. Brody and Frankie Muraida had one hit a piece.
Michael Bunch picked up the win at the mound for CCSJ, pitching four innings, striking out four batters and allowing four hits. Benson spent time at the mound as well, pitching seven innings for the Wave. He struck out three batters and surrendered nine hits along with three earned runs.
Game 2: CCSJ 13, Cornerstone 2
In Game 2, the Crimson Wave scored 13 runs in five innings. Gonzalez and Benson both went 3-for-4 while Cano added three RBIs. Brody also contributed with two hits and two RBIs.
Ian Clark picked up the win at the mound, pitching all seven innings, striking out five while giving up six hits and two earned runs.
