CCSJ Baseball drops season-opener to Trinity Baptist
Davenport, FL – The Calumet College of St. Joseph baseball team fell in the season-opener to Trinity Baptist at Northeast Regional Park on Friday evening.
In the first inning, Blaze Cano was walked at the plate and stole second before Tommy Benson doubled to right field to bring Cano home and score the first run of the contest.
Trinity Baptist was able to tie the game at the bottom of the first and scored three runs in the second inning to take a 4-1 lead.
In the third inning, Cano and Tyler Brody both singled to center field, bringing home three base runners to retake the lead. At the bottom of the third, Trinity Baptist was able to take advantage of an infield error and score two runs.
Later at the bottom of the sixth, Trinity Baptist had four hits to help bring in three runs and take a commanding 9-4 lead.
Attempting to make a comeback, Benson smacked a solo home run to left field in the seventh inning to cut the lead to four. In the top of the eighth, CCSJ's three hits brought in two runs and trimmed the lead to two.
With its final chance in the top of the ninth, Levi Knezevic had a base hit but was out at second after a fielder's choice. Horacio Cabrales was able to steal second and even advance to third base, but that's as far as he would go as Trinity Baptist forced a fly out for the final play of the game.
Brandon Bonin took the loss for the Wave with three innings pitched, giving up five hits and four earned runs. Ian Clark pitched three innings as well, surrendering five hits and three earned runs.
