Madrueno named CSFL Defensive Player of the Year as Crimson Wave lands 11 on All-CSFL teams
11 Crimson Wave Sprint Football players were named to the Collegiate Sprint Football League Hub National teams
Whiting, IN – The Calumet College of St. Joseph sprint football team have 11 representatives on the 2024 Collegiate Sprint Football League Hub National Team. The CSFL Hub National and All-Freshman teams are chosen by the CSFL Hub staff. The players selected are recognized as the best players amongst the two sprint football leagues in the country, the Midwest Sprint Football League (MSFL) and the CSFL.
Junior defensive lineman Tony Madrueno was named the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) Defensive Player of the Year. Madrueno, along with juniors Ryan Davenport, Trevor Busse and Quindarius Davis earned first-team honors.
Juniors Nino Barbosa, Josh Tejeda, Alexander Dellaechaie and Daymon Johnson, along with freshman Jeau Vinatieri, earned second-team honors. Sophomore Jamall Warnell and junior Tristan Dietiker were listed on the third team. Vinatieri was the lone CCSJ sprint football player to be listed on the all-freshman team.
Madrueno finished the year leading the nation in tackles with 30 and sacks with 6.5. 13 of his 30 tackles were for a loss of yards, making that the most of anyone in either league. He also had one fumble recovery and one interception on the season.
Davenport led an offensive line group that helped the Crimson Wave become the best red-zone offense in the MSFL, as well as the best rushing attack. CCSJ lead the MSFL in total rush yards, rush yards per game, rushing first downs and rushing touchdowns. Davenport was a key contributor in this being possible.
Busse, the 2024 MSFL Defensive Player of the Year, finished the season with 58 total tackles. 37 of his 58 tackles were solo and nine of them were for a loss. He also had one sack and five pass break ups. Busse has been recognized as a CSFL first-team honoree two consecutive seasons.
Davis led the CCSJ defense with six pass break ups this season and managed to come up with 26 total tackles. 23 of his 26 tackles were by himself and he also came up with one interception this season. As a kick returner, Davis averaged 34.5 yards per return, the highest of any player on the team. Davis has also been recognized as a CSFL first-team honoree two consecutive seasons.
Quarterback Barbosa threw for 918 passing yards and nine touchdowns this season. From the quarterback slot, he also rushed for 324 yards and nine touchdowns. Barbosa has now made the CSFL Hub National team two years in a row.
Freshman kicker Vinatieri was recognized twice as a CSFL all-freshman honoree and a second-team honoree. Vinatieri made his longest field goal of the season of 41 yards in the 2024 MSFL championship game. He was responsible for 39 points this season, making 30 of his 33 PAT kicks. Vinatieri also had five punts this season that were downed with the opposing teams 20-yard line.
Tejeda earned second-team honors after finishing the season with 37 tackles, 24 of them being solo tackles. Nine of his 37 tackles led to a loss of 44 yards total. He also had 5.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and an interception.
For the second consecutive season, Dellaechaie received second-team honors as he finished the season with 39 total tackles in seven games played. 8.5 of his tackles were for a loss, 24 of them were solo and he also recorded 2.5 sacks.
Johnson finished the season with the second most interceptions in the CSFL at three. He also coupled that with 27 total tackles, four pass break ups, four tackles for a loss and one fumble recovery to earn second team honors after being an honorable mention last year.
Warnell finished his sophomore campaign with 455 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 81 attempts. The Orange, Texas native tied for the second-most rushing touchdowns within the CSFL.
Offensive lineman Dietiker, just like Davenport, was a part of an offensive line group that was key to the Crimson Wave's success. Of all their redzone trips, CCSJ scored on 86 percent of their trips to the redzone, and 75 percent of the time resulted in a touchdown. Dietker was another key component to the Crimson Wave offense.
