CCSJ extends win streak to six after 79-77 win over Trinity Christian
Palos Heights, IL – The Calumet College of St. Joseph men's basketball team extends the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference's longest active winning streak to six after a 79-77 win over Trinity Christian on Thursday evening at the DeVos Gymnasium. Four Crimson Wave players finished in double-digit scoring, led by J.Caleb Slawinski who recorded his sixth double-double of the season.
How it Happened
In the first half, CCSJ (15-9, 10-7 CCAC) had to dig themselves out of an early double-digit deficit after missing six of its first nine shots.
Trailing by 11, it was senior Jared Hankins that scored eight straight points to help end the Crimson Wave's early scoring slump. Moments later, J.Caleb Slawinski made a difficult turnaround jump shot and Zion Morgan made a point-blank layup to give CCSJ the lead at 21-20.
Trinity Christian went on a run to retake the lead but two back-to-back 3-pointers by Colby Wiggins and a floater by Quindarius Davis as time nearly expired in the first half and CCSJ had a three-point lead heading into halftime.
Both teams battled back and forth for majority of the second half as the Crimson Wave were able to sustain a marginal lead. It wasn't until Tylan Harris of Trinity Christian made a catch and shoot 3-pointer out of the corner with one second left on the shot clock to ignite the crowd and tie the game at 73.
Coming out of a timeout with 45 seconds left, Wiggins made a floater in the lane to give the Wave the lead.
The following possession, Scott Gowan went up vertical to contest a layup and managed to get a timely, defensive stop. He was fouled immediately, walked to the other end and made the game sealing free throws to help CCSJ earn its sixth win in a row.
Not only is that the sixth straight win for the Crimson Wave, but it's also the sixth straight CCAC win, the longest active winning streak of any team in the conference.
CCSJ shot 30-of-64 (46.9 percent) from the field while Trinity Christian shot 26-of-62 (41.9 percent) from the field. The Trolls made seven more 3-pointers than the Crimson Wave, but CCSJ outrebounded Trinity Christian 42 to 31 and scored 20 more points in the paint.
