Crimson Wave Men's Volleyball fall in five-set battle with Siena Heights
Adrian, MI – The Calumet College of St. Joseph men's volleyball team came up just short in a 3-2 five-set loss to Siena Heights University at the Fred Smith Court on Tuesday evening. After splitting the first four sets, it came down to the last couple of plays that did not go the Crimson Wave's way, resulting in their seventh loss this season.
How it Happened
In the first set, CCSJ (1-7) had a quick 6-2 lead after a kill by Francis Hauze and back-to-back errors by Siena Heights (3-4).
Later in the set, Gioele Iacono and Ethan Dawson had blocks on consecutive plays to give CCSJ a 15-10 advantage. Errors would be the deciding factor in set one as the Saints committed nine errors, helping the Wave take set one 25-23.
To start the second set, Siena Heights came out focused, earning an early 8-3 lead.
CCSJ was able to pull the score within one, but the Saints scored 10 of the final 13 points to put away the Wave and win the second set 25-16.
In the third set, Siena Heights recorded its best hitting percentage of the evening at .350, to help edge out CCSJ 25-21. After both teams were tied at nine, the Saints scored five straight points to take a lead they were able to sustain.
The Crimson Wave had brought the score within one after a Reshawn Allen kill, followed by an attack error by the Saints, but couldn't ultimately overcome the deficit.
To start the fourth set, CCSJ was the one that came out with the focus and determination, scoring seven of the first nine points.
The Crimson Wave's lead grew to as large as 13 as they recorded their best hitting percentage of the evening at .440. They would win the fourth set 25-14.
In the fifth set, Siena Heights put together an early run to take a 7-2 lead. CCSJ would respond with a kill by Aria Moen and Hauze, followed with a double block from Hauze and Allen.
Three errors by the Saints, coupled with back-to-back kills from Hauze and Allen, and CCSJ had the lead at 13-11. Moments later with the score tied at 14, the Crimson Wave tried to make a block attempt that made its way out of bounds. The following play, its final attempt at a kill went into the net and they ended up on the wrong end of a five-set thriller.
Crimson Wave Leaders
Senior outside hitter Francis Hauze ended with a game-high 24 kills, along with 16 digs and two aces. Ethan Dawson had 10 kills, five digs and two aces while Thomas Garbutt had eight kills and three digs. Aria Moen had 45 assists, four digs and one ace as well.
