Crimson Wave comes up short against St. Ambrose
The CCSJ women’s basketball team fell on the road 55-47 to CCAC opponent St. Ambrose at the Lee Lohman Arena on Wednesday, January 31.
Davenport, IA – The Calumet College of St. Joseph women's basketball team couldn't keep up in the fourth quarter against St. Ambrose, falling 55-47 in a Collegiate Chicagoland Athletic Conference game on Wednesday, January 15.
How It Happened
To start the game, St. Ambrose (5-13, 5-8 CCAC) got out to a 5-0 start before freshman Amaris Gonzalez made a jump shot to get the Crimson Wave on the board.
Trailing 10-4 at the 6:43 mark in the first quarter, Calumet College (1-18, 0-13 CCAC) went on a 7-0 run to its first lead of the game. Throughout that quick span, Marisa Esquivel made a layup and Destiny Hughes scored five points.
The Fighting Bees managed to retake the lead by the end of the first quarter and extend it to eight halfway through the second. CCSJ shot 4-of-5 in the final three minutes of the second quarter, including an Ariel Esquivel corner 3-pointer, to bring the score within four.
Just as the Crimson Wave cut the lead down to one, St. Ambrose went on another run outscoring the Wave 14 to six the remainder of the third quarter to take a nine-point into the fourth. The Fighting Bees took its largest lead of 15 in the fourth quarter that CCSJ could not ultimately recover from.
Crimson Wave Leaders
Destiny Hughes had 14 points, five assists and four rebounds while Marisa Esquivel had 11 points and five rebounds. Ariel Esquivel came off the bench and posted nine points and three rebounds.
