Crimson Wave Defense Shines in 20-Point Win Over Blackburn
The CCSJ women's basketball team took down Blackburn College 73-53 on Saturday afternoon at the Rittenmeyer Center to earn its second win of the season.
Whiting, IN – The Calumet College of St. Joseph women's basketball team earned its second win of the season after beating Blackburn College 73-53 on Saturday, November 30 at the Rittenmeyer Center. Four different players for CCSJ finished with at least 10 points.
How it Happened
The Wave got off to a great on both ends of the court, posting a double-digit lead just six minutes into the contest. A 15-4 run from the opening tipoff was led by the CCSJ defense, that forced Blackburn to miss six of its first eight shots and commit two turnovers in five minutes of action.
By the end of the second quarter, the CCSJ lead rose to 18. That would be the largest lead the Crimson Wave have had this season heading into halftime. Continuing to do it on both ends of the floor, CCSJ was holding Blackburn to 9-of-27 (33.3 percent) shooting from the field in the first half. The Wave were also turning defense into offense, scoring 16 of its 40 first half points off Beaver turnovers.
Blackburn was trying to cut away at the lead in the third quarter, swishing its first 3-pointer after missing its first 11 attempts. The Crimson Wave were able to hold off any comeback attempt from the Beavers, as they scored 28 of its 50 points through three quarters in the paint.
CCSJ continued to extend its lead in the fourth quarter, reaching as much as 22 points. The Wave were able to outscore Blackburn in the paint by 20 points and scored 22 points off the Beavers' 25 turnovers. In this one, the Crimson Wave never surrendered the lead and recorded its largest margin of victory since 2019.
Crimson Wave Leaders
A'Niyah Moreno led all scorers with 16 points. Priscilla Diaz posted a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Markisha Pritchett filled the stat sheet with 13 points, 14 rebounds, five steals and three assists. Derriauna Woodson came off the bench and contributed with 10 points and two blocks.
