Crimson Wave fall in road trip to Trinity Christian
Palos Heights, IL – The Calumet College of St. Joseph women's basketball team had a late surge in the fourth quarter but couldn't overcome the deficit as they fell to Trinity Christian 59-52 on Thursday evening at the DeVos Gymnasium.
How it Happened
Both teams struggled to find their footing in the first half as they both shot below 31 percent from the field. From behind the arc, CCSJ (2-23, 0-17 CCAC) shot 1-of-11 while Trinity Christian (3-20, 3-14 CCAC) shot 1-for-10.
The Trolls managed to take an eight-point advantage in the second quarter, but the Crimson Wave ended the quarter on an 8-2 run to go into halftime tied at 23.
Priscilla Diaz led CCSJ in the final two minutes of the first half, compiling four points, two steals and an assist.
In the second half, the Crimson Wave managed to take their first lead of the game at the 5:02 mark in the third quarter, following a pair of free throws from Derriauna Woodson.
Trinity Christian ended the third quarter on a 7-2 run and swished a 3-pointer the first possession of the fourth quarter to extend the lead back to eight. Moments later, the Trolls were able to extend its lead to double digits, forcing the Crimson Wave to take a timeout.
CCSJ began to full court press and were able to disrupt the Trolls offense.
The Wave made a run late in the fourth quarter as Markisha Pritchett and Diaz made back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to three with 49 seconds left.
Unfortunately for CCSJ, Trinity Christian was able to knock down its final four free throw attempts to put away the Wave and earn the victory.
CCSJ finished the game shooting 19-of-66 (28.8 percent) from the field while Trinity Christian shot 16-of-52 (30.8 percent) from the field. Both teams shot under 23 percent from 3-point range and committed at least 14 turnovers.
Crimson Wave Leaders
Priscilla Diaz ended with a team-high 15 points, five steals and four assists. Markisha Pritchett had nine points, six rebounds and three assists while Derriauna Woodson had eight points and five rebounds. A'Niyah Moreno and Amelia Scorsone chipped in with six points each while Ariana Lemons posted a team-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
