Wave Can't Muster Comeback Versus Lakers
EAST CHICAGO, Ind.- With both teams in Saturday afternoons matchup between the Calumet College of St. Joseph and Roosevelt University women's soccer teams looking for their first CCAC win on the season, fierce competition was to be expected. Roosevelt went on to set the pace early, and pulled away in the second half, defeating CCSJ 3-1 at East Chicago Central Field.
The first half started with a bang, as Monica Munoz knocked one past goal keeper Jade Newton (FR/Macclesfield, England)'s outstretched arms for her her fifth goal of the season, and Roosevelt gave the 1-0 lead just over three minutes in. The Crimson and Gray had several chances to tie it up immediately after the Lakers initial goal, with a point blank shot from Raquel Salinas (SR/Berkley, Ill.) stopped by netminder Kara Jones, and the possible rebound opportunity being knocked out of the reach of several Wave players. Shot attempts would be about even after that point, before Chelsea Olson tallied her fourth goal of the season with under five minutes in the 1st, sending the game into the half with the score of 2-0 in favor of RU.
The Wave would try to mount an attack in the second half, with Alex Clemente (SR/Rensselaer, Ind.) scoring her first goal of the season to cut the lead to 2-1 at the 55:54-minute mark. Clemente's goal was the first for the Crimson Wave in over 450 minutes, dating back to September 2nd. Ten minutes later, the Lakers' Munoz would put the game away, scoring her second of the game, sixth of the season, with a tap in off a Jasmine Castillo (SO/Chicago, Ill.) save. Castillo had entered the game at the start of the second half, replacing Newton in goal.
For the Crimson and Gray (0-6-1, 0-4-0 CCAC), Clemente had four shots, all of them on goal, to go along with CCSJ's only goal of the afternoon. Andrea Ramirez (SR/East Chicago, Ind.), Raquel Salinas, and Katie Rubright (SR/Wood Dale, Ill.) also had shots in the game. Newton and Castillo each played 45 minutes, with Newton allowing two goal and no saves, while Castillo allowed one but saved three.
The women's soccer team will see their next game action on Wednesday, when they head to Chicago, Ill. for a 6:00 pm kickoff against St. Xavier University.
