Wave Falls to Cougars in OT
CHICAGO, Ill. – Calumet College of St. Joseph's Jade Newton (FR/Macclesfield, England) stood strong in goal for over 90 minutes, but would allow the only goal in the game to go past her with just over four minutes elapsed in extra time, as the Crimson Wave dropped their second overtime match of the season 1-0 to Saint Xavier University (2-6-3, 2-2-1 CCAC) Wednesday night in Chicago.
The Crimson and Gray did a nice job limiting the Cougars scoring chances, while taking advantage of their own opportunities during regulation. At the end of the 90-minute regular session SXU held a slight shot advantage 9-7, with five of their shots being on goal, while CCSJ managed to get five of their own stopped by Saint Xavier keeper Ashley Smialek. All signs pointed toward this match ending in a draw before Alyssa Gilman would bury a header from the right side of the net, giving the Cougars the win at 94:20 in the first extra session.
Alex Clemente (SR/Rensselaer, Ind.) was once again the star offensively for Calumet College (0-7-1, 0-5-0 CCAC), managing to get all three of her shots on the evening on goal. Hannah Alderson (JR/Manchester, England) had two shots, and both Esmeralda Padilla (SR/Chicago, Ill.) and Fatima Garcia (SR/Cicero, Ill.) each had one in the losing effort. Newton stopped five of the six shots that she faced.
Next up for the wave in another CCAC foe in Olivet Nazarene University. They will take on the Tigers at 5:00 pm on Saturday evening at East Chicago Central Field, a game that was originally scheduled for Noon, and then moved to 7:00 pm before settling on the new starting time two hours earlier.
