Lady Wave Turn In Top Five Performances In Vegas
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Calumet College of St. Joseph women's bowling team headed to Sin City this week, returning to the lanes for the first time in over a month. The rest clearly helped the team, as they turned in two of their best performances all season, including their best overall performance during a Tier One event in program history
First up on the four day two tournament trip was the Glenn Carlson Invitational. After rolling their way to a number five seed entering match play, the Lady Wave caught fire. They first defeated Midland in the round of 16 by a score of 3-1, before knocking off top-seeded Wichita State in three straight games in the semi-final round. Waiting for them in the championship match was University of St. Francis, entering the final round having started with a six seed. The match went the distance with the Saints coming away with the fifth and decisive victory. Despite the defeat, the second place finish was the highest the Crimson and Gray had ever finished in a Tier One event.
The second tournament that the Lady Wave participated in was the 2017 Collegiate Shootout, another tournament that they finished in the top five. Porsche Chartrand (SR/Camas, Wash.) finished in the top ten of all bowlers with a 214.8 average. Brianna Ferro (SR/Elkhart, Ind.) also placed high, finishing 16th with a 201 average. In the Baker Round the team finished with a total of 3987 pins, good for a fourth place finish.
With the trip now over, the Crimson and Gray have now finished in the top five during three of the five tournaments they have played in this season. Head coach Randy Vania raved about his team's performance this week. "The two performances that the girls turned in this week is a testament to our ladies' hard work and dedication to winning the CCSJ Way!" The Lady Wave will now take another three weeks off before participating in the Roto Grip Eagles Baker Challenge on Jan. 13-14 from Addison, Ill.
