Verta leads Wave to first win of season over Wiley College

MARSHALL, Texas – Zach Verta (SO/Chicago, Ill.) showed his versatility on Tuesday, March 3 when the Calumet College of St. Joseph baseball team picked up their first win over their 2020 campaign, a 16-6 dominance of Wiley College (Texas). Verta not only threw five innings of stellar baseball on the mound for the Wave, but he also went 2-for-4, driving in three runs and connecting for his first home run of the season. The Wildcats came back with a vengeance, however, in the nightcap to take a 13-1 win.

Teodoro Marquez (JR/Chicago, Ill. ) connected for three hits in his five plate appearances for the Wave in the victory. He drove in two runs and scored two. Daniel Inglesias also drove in three runs, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Alan Sanchez (SR/Oak Lawn, Ill.) threw two perfect innings of relief.

In game two, Calumet connected for just three hits as a team, all singles from Noah Miller (SO/Chicago, Ill.), Michael Mireles (JR/Hammond, Ind.) and Inglesias. Bubba Davenport (FR/Griffith, Ind.) suffered the loss on the mound.
