Crimson Wave Baseball picks up 3 wins against Hannibal-LaGrange

Marion, IL - The Calumet College Baseball team picked up three wins in two doubleheaders against Hannibal-LaGrange over the weekend. Taking two shutout wins on Friday, the Wave lost a close first game Saturday, 6-5, but came back to win the second game 7-6. 

 

Game One: Calumet 7, Hannibal 0

The Crimson Wave were the first to score in the matchup off a single from Darrius Litte in the 1st inning to score Sean Moore

CCSJ scored again in the 4th inning after a fielder's choice hit by Cody Wilkins scored Gabriel Quinones. The Wave scored Quinones again in the 5th inning off a double from Ryan Kalinowski, bringing their lead to 3-0.

The Crimson Wave scored their final runs of the game in the 6th inning, first Moore scored on a fly ball error hit by Nicholas Anderson. Michael Machnic singled to right field to score Little and bring the score to 5-0. Quinones followed suit, hitting a single to right field, and scored Anderson. The final run of the game was scored by Machnic off a single from Kalinowski and secured the Wave's 7-0 win.

Maxwell Everaert went the distance for CCSJ, pitching all 7 innings and allowing only 1 hit with 4 strikeouts. Quinones led the Wave offense, going 3-4 with a triple, 1 RBI, and 2 runs scored. 

 

Game Two: Claumet 9, Hannibal 0

CCSJ scored first again in the 1st inning off a double from Machnic that scored Moore. 

In the 3rd inning, Little singles to left field and scored Moore and Maurey Garrett to bring CCSJ's lead to 3-0. 

The 4th inning led the Wave to increase their lead even further. Little started it off singling again and scored Jacob St. Marie and Wilkins. Anderson followed with a single to left field, scoring Moore. Mechanic singled to center field to score Little and brought the score to 7-0.

The final runs of the game were scored in the 6th inning of a single from Machnic to center field that scored Little and Anderson to bring the Wave's score to 9-0 and win game two. 

Little and Machnic led the offense going 3-4 with 4 RBI's, Little with 2 runs scored, and Machnic with a double. 

William LePretre Jr. started the game off on the mound for the Wave and went 5 innings, allowing just 3 hits and striking out 3. Anthony Rivera came in in relief in the 6th inning and recorded 1 strikeout in the two innings. LePretre earned the win for the game. 

 

Game Three: Hannibal 6, Calumet 5

Saturday, the Crimson Wave started off the first game of the doubleheader by scoring in the top of the 2nd inning. Colton Nott doubled to left field, scoring Wilkins for the 1-0 CCSJ lead. Hannibal countered in the bottom of the 2nd inning, scoring their first runs of the weekend and taking the lead 3-1. 

CCSJ held the Trojans and scored the next runs of the game in the top of the 6th inning to take the lead back. Moore singled to center field, scoring Wilkins and Nino Barbosa, then Little lined out to right field, scoring Garrett and bringing the Wave's lead to 4-3. 

In the top of the 7th, CCSJ scored again as Christian Rosales singled and scored Quinones to extend their lead to 5-3. The Trojans came back in the bottom of the 7th inning, scoring 2 runs, to tie the game and force an 8th inning. Hannibal shut down the Wave in the top of the inning and scored in the bottom of the 8th off a sacrifice fly to win the game 6-5. 

Andrew Davenport started the game on the mound for CCSJ, going 4 innings with 3 strikeouts, 7 hits allowed, 3 earned runs, and 3 walks. Gerardo Hernandez went to the mound in the top of the 5th inning for the Wave with 1 strikeout, 5 hits allowed, and 2 earned runs. Jorge Santos closed out the game for CCSJ, coming in for Hernandez in the bottom of the 7th inning. Santos pitched for 1.2 innings, striking out 2, allowing 2 hits, and giving up 1 unearned run.

 

Game Four: Calumet 7, Hannibal 6

The Crimson Wave scored first again in the final game of the weekend, gaining a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning off of a single from Anderson to score Moore. 

Hannibal held CCSJ from scoring again until the 3rd inning. Quinones was hit by a pitch with bases loaded, scoring Moore again. Davenport followed with a bases-clearing double to center field, scoring Little, Anderson, and Quinones, bringing their lead to 5-0. 

In the top of the 5th inning, Quinones scored again for the Wave off a single to left field from St. Marie, extending their lead to 6-0. In the bottom of the inning, Hannibal scored their first runs of the game off a wild pitch from Moore and a fielder's choice, bringing the score to 6-2. 

CCSJ scored their final run of the game in the top of the 6th inning off a single to right field from Little, scoring Garrett, bringing their lead to 7-2. The Trojans scored their first run of the inning off an error from Wilkins, making the score 7-3. Hannibal followed with a double and a single that scored two runs off of Moore before Rosales went to the mound for relief and closed out the inning. The Trojans cut CCSJ's lead down to 7-5 going into the 7th inning of the game. 

CCSJ was 3 up 3 down in the top of the inning but still had a two-run lead going into the bottom of the 7th inning. The Wave got the first out of the inning, but 3 back to back singles off of Rosales sent Santos back to the mound to finish the game. Hannibal scored 1 run off a fielder's choice to make the second out of the game. The Crimson Wave held the Trojan from tying up the game, winning game four 7-6 and winning the weekend 3-1. 

Moore pitched 5.1 innings for the Wave, finishing with 5 strikeouts, 8 hits allowed, 5 earned runs and 2 walks. Rosales went to the mound for 1 inning, allowing 3 hits and 1 earned run. Santos finished the game for CCSJ for the final 2 outs of the day. 

 

What's Next? 

The Crimson Wave head to Georgia to start their Spring Break trip where they'll take on Mid-Atlantic Christian and Toccoa Falls on Friday, March 3rd and 4th before heading to Florida.
