Crimson Wave Men’s Basketball topple NAIA’s No. 13-ranked Roosevelt, 69-64

Whiting, IN – The CCSJ's men's basketball team managed to take down NAIA's No. 13-ranked Roosevelt 69-64 at the Rittenmeyer Center on Saturday, January 27. The Crimson Wave were able to hand the Lakers their first Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference loss of the season. In the process of handing Roosevelt its first loss in the CCAC, it is also the first time Roosevelt has lost a game in 2024.

How it Happened

The game began with both teams trading baskets as Colby Wiggins made a deep 3-pointer from the left wing to give CCSJ (5-14, 3-9 CCAC) its first lead of the game, before Roosevelt's Forte Prater answered back with an emphatic dunk on the other end.

Shortly after, Quindarius Davis checked into the game and made his first shot of the game to give Crimson Wave a 12-6 advantage.

Calumet College was able to build on that marginal lead late in the first half as Hrvoje Majcunic nailed a corner 3-pointer, followed by a pair of made free throws by Devan Nichols, that gave CCSJ a double-digit lead.

To start the second half, Prater scored six points in two minutes to help Roosevelt (17-3, 11-1 CCAC) cut the lead down to seven.

Wiggins would respond for the Crimson Wave knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers, both assisted by Joshua Morris.

After a Floyd Davis layup with 7:57 remaining, Calumet College would have its largest lead of 14 against the No. 1 team in the CCAC.

As the No. 1-ranked conference team, Roosevelt would not go away quietly. Over the next six minutes of play, the Laker's Maurice Commander would score 11 of his 21 2nd half points to cut the lead down to four.

With the clock in their favor, the Wave went 3-of-4 from the free throw line in the final minute of the contest to hold on to the win.

As a team, Calumet College shot 48 percent (22-of-46) from the field and 41 percent (9-for-22) from behind the arc. Defensively, CCSJ had one of its best performances as they held Roosevelt to 5-of-22 shooting from 3-point range. That would be the Lakers third worst 3-point performance all season.

The Crimson Wave also outrebounded Roosevelt 38 to 23. The Lakers 23 rebounds would be their lowest number of total rebounds in any game this entire season.

Crimson Wave Leaders

Oshawn Lee came off the bench and led all CCSJ players with 15 points and made all six of his free throws. Colby Wiggins had 12 points and six rebounds while Reginald Loury had 11 points and five rebounds. Floyd Davis also led the Wave with eight rebounds in the win.

Up Next

Coming off arguable its most impressive win of the season, CCSJ returns to action Wednesday, January 31 as they travel to Iowa to face St. Ambrose at 7:30 PM.
