Crimson Wave Men’s Volleyball earns first CCAC win of the season against Olivet Nazarene

Whiting, IN – In its first home game and Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference game of the season, the Calumet College of St. Joseph men's volleyball team couldn't have asked for a better outing. CCSJ swept Olivet Nazarene 3-0 on Monday, February 26 at the Rittenmeyer Center.

In the opening set, Calumet College recorded 16 kills on a .429 hitting percentage, which would be the best performance of the evening. Olivet Nazarene had the lead for more than half of the set until the Wave scored four straight points to take the lead at 19-18. 

Tied at 22, Brayden Richardson assisted on the last three kills to help the Crimson Wave close the set out 25-23.

At the half way point in the second set, both teams were fighting hard and find themselves tied at 13. Three straight errors by Olivet Nazarene allowed CCSJ to create a gap amongst the two.

Calumet College capitalized on the mistakes from the Tigers and extended the lead to six after a Thomas Garbutt kill. Francis Hauze would record the final kill of the set to end it at 25-19.

In the third set, the Crimson Wave scored five straight points to take an early 12-6 advantage. Olivet Nazarene would later score five straight themselves to bring the score back within one.

With the score tied at 20, Olivet Nazarene committed three crucial attack errors that fed into the Crimson Wave crowd. Hauze had two kills down the stretch, both assisted by Richardson, to complete the sweep and win the third set 25-21.

For the game, Hauze finished with a game-high 15 kills while Pedro Castillo finished with 14 kills. Castillo also had six assists and a team-high six digs while Gustavo Medina had four digs. Richardson had 27 of the team's 36 assists in the win.
