Wave opens season with win over IU-Southeast; nightcap called due to darkness

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Calumet College of St. Joseph softball team showed they were ready for the 2020 season, jumping out to an early lead on Indiana University – Southeast on Friday, Feb. 21, coming away with a 4-1 win. In the nightcap, the Wave came back from a five-run deficit, plating five runs in the sixth inning, to send the game into extra innings. Both teams would score on the International Tiebreaker before the game was called due to darkness at a 6-6 tie.

Josselline Monge (JR/Guatemala City, Guatemala ) picked up the win in game one, throwing a complete game gem. She allowed seven hits and five earned runs, with one walk and three strikeouts. Sarah Kessler (SR/Lansing, Ill. ) put in eight innings of hard work in game two, allowing seven runs and five runs – only one earned. She struck out two and walked four.

Offensively, Kayla Kirmani (FR/Lowell, Ind.) finished the day hitting .667, going 4-for-6 at the plate while driving in two runs. Kayla Kirmani added a 2-for-4 performance in game two, including a double and two RBIs.
