Crimson Wave Sprint Football loses inaugural game 34-28 in overtime to Pomeroys

Whiting, IN - After a year of planning and preparation, the inaugural Sprint Football game day had finally arrived. The Calumet College Sprint Football team hosted the St. Mary of the Woods Pomeroys for the MSFL's first-ever in-state rivalry game between the two schools. The Crimson Wave started off the game strong, looking like a well-oiled machine, but after the halftime break struggled to produce and hold off the Pomeroys. After a strong first half, the Wave couldn't hold off SMWC and lost the inaugural game in overtime 34-28.

How it Happened

The Crimson Wave scored the first two touchdowns of the game with a 35-yard pass from QB Blaze Cano to Darren Reese and a 3-yard run from Elijah Antis, giving the Wave a 14-0 lead in the 1st Quarter.

The Pomeroys scored the first touchdown in the 2nd Quarter and went for the 2-point conversion to cut the Wave's lead down to 14-8. CCSJ countered with a 9-yard run from Jonathan Flemings then a 45-yard run from Flemings to bring the Wave's lead to 28-8. SMWC scored once more before the first half was over to cut down the Crimson Wave's lead to 28-14 going into the halftime break.

In the 3rd and 4th Quarters, the Pomeroys scored to tie the game up at 28-28 and forced the Crimson Wave into overtime. SMWC got the first chance to score and succeeded with a touchdown and 2-point conversion to take the 34-28 lead. During the Wave's chance to score, CCSJ got down the field, but an interception from SMWC on the 4th down solidified the end and the Pomeroys' first-ever win.

Starting QB, Cano, passed for 67 yards with 38% completion rate. Flemings ran for 153 years, averaging 9.5 and scored 2 touchdowns. The Crimson Wave were consistent with their kicking throughout the game, Christian Price was 4-4 on field goals, and Jared Saez punted 233 yards, averaging 33.3 yards and kicked off 150 yards. Defensively, Trevor Busse led the Wave with 12 total tackles, but Alexander Dellaechaie and Brian Walker each had 5 solo tackles.
